Fern Frond Bridge
Dolton Designs

Brief: Replace existing timber bridge with steel, using surrounding flora as inspiration for an abstract, flowing design, rather than imitating nature – to be a piece of art within the garden, compliment the surroundings to be enjoyed by visitors from a distance and while crossing over the water.

Materials chosen: Mild steel structure with 4 panels to each side: box section frames enclosing laser cut panels – Galvanized.

Galvanizing: The galvanised finish is integral to this project both for reasons of longevity, as it is in a damp, shady area of the garden, over a stream with lush planting surrounding it and of aesthetics; Dolton Designs stipulated that the piece should be ‘non-quenched’ to give the mottled finish that would best suit the site – this finish feels natural, neutral and looks sculptural within the garden.  There were concerns of possible distortion during the process due to the combination of box section and flat laser cut panels, and, needing to avoid drips hanging from the tips of the frond design.  However, the outcome was desirable and Dolton Designs are looking forward to pushing boundaries and learning more of what is achievable using this finish.
